Compressor Impeller

Centrifugal compressor impellers are critical unit components that require repair when subjected to erosion, process upsets and foreign object damage during operation. Repair of damaged impellers to restore them to original design and drawing requirements begins with access to the original D-R equipment engineering/ manufacturing data. The repairs are made in accordance with OEM procedures to precise welding process controls.

Weld repairs of impellers can range from restoring localized areas, to extensive rebuilding required as a result of process upset damage. D-R’s Tulsa, Oklahoma service center is a “Center of Excellence” for impeller repair. All impeller repairs are reviewed by the company’s engineering personnel and original equipment process procedures are used to weld repair and post-weld heat-treat the impellers. The quality and serviceability of the repair is verified by stringent Florescent Magnetic Particle NDT requirements and over-speed testing of each weld-repaired impeller.

D-R weld repair technology can be applied to non-Dresser-Rand centrifugal impellers. Components are reviewed by D-R’s engineering support team to develop process procedures by either applying existing specifications to the parts or qualifying new procedures to provide repair solutions for the client’s equipment.

Impeller Modifications
Dresser-Rand’s welding technology used for impeller repairs can also be applied to change the dimensions of the impeller bore or labyrinth seal location. D-R’s CA-TIG™ process is used to weld the labyrinth seal diameter to allow for the machining of integral labyrinth teeth into the impeller in fouling situations. The impeller bore also can be modified to increase the shrink fit or make other changes to the bore configuration.

Dresser-Rand is a leader in the industry, with state-of-the-art welding technology that provides clients with innovative repair solutions.
